If you have spent any time on stock photo platforms, you know the drill: pick a subscription tier, get locked into a monthly charge, and hope you download enough to justify the cost. We decided not to do that.
Here is how Picster actually works, and why we built it this way.
The Credit System, Plainly Explained
Every image on Picster is priced in credits. Each credit costs €0.15, and you buy them in a single top-up — no recurring billing, no account required to browse. If you need ten credits, you buy ten credits. If you come back in three months and need twenty more, you buy twenty more. Nothing charges your card in the background.
When you purchase an image, the credits are deducted from your balance immediately and you get a download licence for that file. Simple.
For artists, the maths is equally straightforward: you receive 50% of the credit value of every sale. If your photo is listed at 8 credits (€1.20), you earn 4 credits, which converts to €0.60 paid out to you. There are no tiered royalty rates that shift depending on how many downloads you hit in a quarter. Everyone starts at 50%, and it stays there.
Why One-Time Top-Ups Instead of a Subscription
Subscriptions make sense for platforms where people download dozens of images a month. For most independent buyers — a small studio refreshing a website, a self-published author sourcing cover art, a local business updating its socials — that volume just is not there. A subscription punishes light use.
With top-ups, you only spend money when you actually buy something. Your credit balance does not expire. If you load €6 worth of credits and use half of them, the other half sit in your account until you need them.
For artists, the absence of a subscription also matters. Platforms that sell cheap bulk subscriptions often compress royalties to cover the model. We do not have that pressure, which is part of why a flat 50% commission is workable for us.
A Few Other Things Worth Knowing
- Featured queue: We hand-curate which images appear in the featured section. There is no algorithm and no paid placement. If your work gets featured, it is because someone on our small team thought it deserved the visibility.
- Payouts: We handle artist payments by email. When your balance reaches a payout threshold, you request a withdrawal and we process it manually. It is not instant, but it is transparent — you can see exactly what you have earned and why.
- No hidden fees on top-ups: The credit price is €0.15. That is what you pay. We do not add a processing surcharge at checkout.
The Trade-Off
We will be honest about the downside: if you are a high-volume buyer downloading images every week, a subscription elsewhere might work out cheaper per image. We are not trying to be everything to everyone. Picster is built for buyers who want to pay as they go and for artists who want a straightforward, predictable commission without chasing tier thresholds.
The credit system is not a novel invention. But pairing it with no subscriptions, a flat artist rate, and a manually curated front page reflects a deliberate choice about what kind of marketplace we want to run — small, legible, and fair to both sides of the transaction.
